The Ostrovksy Branch of the Family Tree
Laeb Ostrovsky, Nora Deuber's grandfather: birth date, date of death, unknown. Born in Belaya Tcherkov, Ukraine. Died in Obukhov, Russia (see Notes, below).
At right: Labe Ostrovsky and his sister (Sonia?). On the back of the photo is a note in a language I can't read. It may be pre-revolution Russian script.
Labe married:
Rachel Leah Padolsky, born May 21, 1828 in Russia; died March 10, 1910 in Dayton, Ohio.
The photo below shows Rachel Leah on the left and daughter Minnie on the right. The photo was probably taken in the early to mid-1890s in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Their children:
Eta Ostrovsky, birth date unknown; died in 1916 in Dayton, Ohio. Married Labe Karzensky, date unknown.
Fega (Fanny) Ostrovsky, born 1862; died 1932 in Dayton, Ohio. Married Moisha (Morris) Gradsky, date unknown.
Sonia "Sunny" Ostrovsky, no birth or death date; died in Dayton, Ohio. Married Mendel Pollack, date unknown.
Morris Ostrow, born 1865, died April 21, 1937 in Los Angeles, California. Married Mary Eisenberg Ostrow in 1895.
Harry Ostrov, birth date unknown; died June 11, 1930 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Married Fanny Stolbinsky Ostrov in 1874.
Minnie Ostrov, born 1880; died December 7, 1970 in Los Angeles, California. Married Philip Finkler, date unknown.
Sophie Ostrovsky, also born 1880; date of death unknown; died in Los Angeles, California. Married Albert Eprath, date unknown.
Ida Ostrow (Nora Deuber's mother, my grandmother), birth date unknown, but estimated to be between 1880 and 1885; died 1945 in Fresno, California. Married Bernard Warshaw; 2 children; divorced; married Hyman Kast; 1 child (see Warshaw page)
On the right is one of my favorite pictures from this generation. From left to right, they are Minnie, Ida, and Sophie Ostrovsky. Ida was my grandmother and Nora Warshaw Deuber's mother. These three ladies must have been the most photogenic of the eight children, because there are a lot of pictures of the three of them together. I think they're absolutely gorgeous! |
NOTES
Laeb: Based on newly found information, he was born in Belaya Tcherkov in Russia and was buried in Obukhov in the Ukraine.
The photo of Laeb on this page is the only one I have. I assume that if he had come to the U.S., there would be as many pictures of him as there are of his wife and children.
Ida Ostrow (my grandmother): I guessed at her birth date. I was very young when she died, evidently from complications of diabetes. Ida married when she was twenty. My mother, born in 1903, was the younger of two children from Ida's first marriage.
Names: As you may have noticed, many of these folks anglicized their names when they came to the U.S. - dropped the 'sky' from the end, changed the 'v' to a 'w' - and took more non-Russian sounding first names.
