Unit 8 - Filters and Effects
The focus in Unit 8 was on learning to use Filters and Effects. We created a montage in Chapter 12 of the Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book, which included more than just the use of filters and effects. We learned to record and play back actions for batch processing; got some additional practice with the selection tools; saved and loaded a selection; used snap-to guides to align images on the canvas; and applied various filters and effects.

Our assignment, outside of doing the exercise in the book, was to create an original montage and three others that show the various effects that were applied to the original.

This is the exercise from Chapter 12, created pretty much according to the instructions in the chapter.

Montage 1

This is my original montage, using images scanned from some very old slides! No adjustments have been made to the scanned images.

I created the background from a photo I took recently. It can be seen below.

Montage 2

Levels were adjusted using Adjustment Layers grouped with the previous layers. Clockwise from upper left:

1. Yellowstone: No changes.
2. Erosion:
      Input 5, 1.00, 158
      Output 30, 240
3. Snow Flower:
      Input 0, 1.00, 137
      Output 0, 255
4. River Rocks:
      Input 0, 1.32, 156
      Output 0, 232

Montage 3
Clockwise from top left

1. Yellowstone: Unsharp Mask
    Amount 70%
    Radius 5.0 pixels
    Threshold 50 levels

2. Erosion: No changes

3. Snow Flower:
    Hue/Saturation
    Blues Hue 0, Saturation -80,
      Lightness +73
    Reds Hue +67, Saturation +14,
      Lightness +29

Added a layer above the image and painted the plant with green. Used the Sponge tool on the image to desaturate the snow to get rid of the remaining blue and magenta hues, particularly in the shadows. Then used the Eraser tool at 20% opacity to partially erase the darkest areas of the shadows. Then used the Eraser tool at 20% opacity to partially erase the darkest areas of the shadows. On the green layer, used the Unsharp Mask: Amount 142%, Radius 80 pixels, Threshold 30 levels.

4. River Rocks:
Color Balance - Added an Adjustment Layer
    Highlights +30, -1, +14
    Midtones +19, +4, -29
    Shadows +11, +20, -16
    Preserve Luminosity selected

This is the image I used for my background. I have been having a lot of dental work done recently, including some extractions, minor oral surgery, and the whole process of getting a partial made to replace the missing teeth! I chose to have this all done at the Ohio State University (Go Buckeyes!) because it's kind of reassuring to have everything checked and double checked by a professor and because it makes me feel good to let 4th year students learn to be good dentists by practicing on me. And... the prices are really good!

When I spend that much time staring at the ceiling, I have to find some way to amuse myself. This is a section of one of the fluorescent lighting fixtures. The light shining on the reflectors/baffles/diffusers... whatever they are... makes lovely rainbow colors. Couldn't resist the urge to take some photos on my next visit! This is the scaled version of the original, which was seriously enlarged and blurred using - what else! - one of the Blur filters in Photoshop. In this photo, no adjustments were made other than the blurring. I did add a Levels adjustment layer in the final montage.
